The over-the-hill crowd is not as true today as it was in the past. Over the hill implies experience, and lots of it. Not just in a given field, but in life, business and finance. The 40+ crowd is recognized today by companies to be of value.

And consulting is the best place to be, in any field. Everyone pretty much has to sell themselves to get a regular 'employee' position, so you may as well brush up those skills and sell your services directly. There is no legal protection by being an employee anyway. Sadly, today companies can terminate with no notice, warning, or justification.
