Company costs MUST come down...

Unfortunately, with energy, facilities, insurance and other costs going up for companies, they have to find a way to bring costs down (both to remain competitive and to make the shareholders happy).

Sadly enough, this affects the 'lowliest helpdesk jobs' and other less experienced positions since those are the positions being sent overseas into cheaper economic areas. There are also many mid-level jobs moving, but not as much as the lower end.

I myself was out of work for exactly 1 year. I am a highly skilled ERP systems integrator with over 15 years experience. My problem was the lack of positions available. Luckily, I have a great position again. Because of the pay, I tend to be able to cushion any layoffs, which is rising because again, companies are staving off high costs and therefore do not purchase new ERP systems (which means no job for me, the consultant).

In ending, I can only say that you should use any time off to become more experienced. Experience is now the key, more so than higher education. I remember all the horror stories of young pups replacing the 40+ generation, and thankfully, now have the luxury of not worrying about that. My five strands of grey hair are no longer a bad, but a benefit!
