Personally..
I don't have a problem with text ads, as long as they're unobtrusive (ie. unlike Yahoo search results.. where "sponsor results" for my search, ford, filled up the entire browser window).

Let's face it: there's no such thing as a free lunch, and ultimately, we need to pay for the services we use on the web. If we have to pay through being exposed to advertising.. text ads are a hell of a lot better than:
pop ups
pop unders
flash ads
banner ads

because..
they are a smaller download (a few hundred bytes
vs. 100+ kilobytes..)
relatively unobtrusive.. you don't need to do anything to ignore them (perhaps scrolling down.. but that's not a big deal..)

About IE getting popup protection.. it's about damn time.. this is one area (one of a few..) where IE seriously lacks compared to other browsers..

luckily the google toolbar is very effective at blocking these ads :->
