Many others profit from the internet
It is not just content providers selling ads that profit from a popular, useful internet. The ISPs selling bandwidth are direct beneficiaries. My local Roadrunner has a lot of link services that are provided on their local web site free of ads although rife with Roadrunner logos.

Microsoft certainly has a stake in the internet and in keeping it as satisfying of an experience as possible. Busting ads is something that meets its agenda, I would think. They are not so bashful about providing a search engine, too, and are threatening Google's near monopoly on the search business.
