I use Ubuntu 8.04 64-biisplt on two of my computers. After reading this blog, I decided to check out the Google Gadgets for Linux. My first impression is that this is not ready for prime time. There is no package availale from my distribution, so I had to compile from source code. Doing this required the installation of about a dozen other packages. The instructions on the Google Code page didn't work at first; I had to search the page to find a valid instruction set (the instructions didn't list all off the packages required to install).

Once I had all the required libraries installed, I was able to install from source without a hitch. The sidebar works just fine, but you can't display the gadgets without the sidebar. All of the gadgets I tested worked perfectly.
