..XML for presentation layer? Absolutely...

I absolutely agree.
I am working on a side project for a web based app.
My goal was to deliver a desktop experience.
The nature of the application requires random access to the data hierarchy and the need to display snippets of related data in a user driven manner.

My treeview uses a webservice to pull the xml off a .Net based webservice with is using MSSql for XML output.

Two transforms on the client and you get a treeview that does not require a postback to expand/collapse.
Updates to the content is done on a background thread which re-parses the XML for changes and updates the UI.

You could do all this with hidden frames etc but the XML architecture other clients can consume the data directly. So can other servers.

It's been very complicated and our use of XML I hope will put the killer into the title of the app.
