..I therefore seriously question XML's utility as an effective exchange mechanism....


You gave two examples of direct DB-DB transfer.
Was there any data transformation involved or where the schemas identical?

Now another scenario.
You publish the xml schema describing the data format for input into your db.
Wrap it in a webservice say.
Clients A-Z now know that if they export their data to comply with the schema, your db will except it.
Your source db and schema have been abstracted and made available for the world.

As an application data transport I use it extensively for smart DHTML clients calling webservices.
The payload is procesed and ui is driven via xsl.

As the author suggests, near desktop type experience is possible and XML is key if you are adverse to dealing with string parsing.
