All very well but...
A while ago I was involved in an integration project following a merger.

My boss wanted to do the daily transfer of data over flat files between the two companies. I insisted that we should do the transfer direct database to database. By this means I avoided having to write an export program and an import program, didn't have to worry about where to store the flat files, what order to process them in, whether I had processed only a part or all of the files and all the other nastinesses associated with flat file interfaces.

Recently a former colleague was forced to participate in an XML integration project. They wanted to move data from one Oracle database to another with XML. This involved writing an export program from one database and then writing an import program to the other. In the end the project was dropped and they did the thing the proper way with a database links allowing the data transfer to be done with a single SQL statement.

Data integration and transfer has to follow the basic rules for distributed database management or it won't work properly. XML gives you almost nothing to support this.

I therefore seriously question XML's utility as an effective exchange mechanism.
