Merits of Gmail
First, you have to realize that Gmail is offering 10x the storage of Yahoo or Hotmail right now. Secondly, having used Hotmail, Yahoo, and now Gmail, I can tell you Gmail is far superior in most ways. I was watching a friend use her Hotmail account, and it was stunning how many options Hotmail *doesn't* have (the most glaring example I can think of off the top of my head being mail forwarding to another account). Add to that the fact that both Yahoo and Hotmail route spam to your e-mail account (i.e., they generate spam over and beyond what you'd get otherwise).

Where Gmail is really comparatively weak is in the address arena. You get a contact list, but not a full-fledged address book, where different people can have multiple addresses. This is somewhat made up for by the sophisticated type-as-you-go mail addressing, but there's lots of room for improvement.

Another problem is the default blocking of images, and the inability to tell Gmail which images to let through by default. I get some regular e-mails (like my Daily Dilbert and weather) that are almost useless if they don't contain images.

Some people have also complained about the lack of HTML mail authoring, but I don't find that a serious limitation.

I have to say, though, Gmail seems far superior to any of the other free services I've tried.
