I agree only on the patents, but trademarks are not be issued unless the name you are trademarking is actually in use. While it is possible to file prior to the launch of your business, you then have to ammend the application after the sevice is launched, which costs more money. Trademarks also take at least a year to aquire from the time the mark is put into use, providing there are no problems with the application.

Another thing to consider is that trademarks are issued by class, and I have seen the same name trademarked by different companies because they use it within this narrow class category that pertains to their business. I know this from searching for my own mark and variations of it. With any luck, this is the case for Google, but I do admit they should have filed no more than a day or two later.
