And this is just the beginning
My favorite part:

"A study conducted by market researcher IDC and funded by Microsoft found that the software giant's products were more cost-effective than open-source software in four out of five instances."

Imagine a study paid for by MSFT showing their products are cheaper. Shocker! Notice only the paid studies are coming out in MSFT's favor? Even stupid people will start to pick up on that before long.

Even if California goes a different route you can bet MSFT will have to buy up CA politicians like Hugh Grant buys LA hookers. Either way they'll have to part with some of that massive profit margin to defend their market share. Which they can afford to do, for a while.

But this is only the beginning. Foreign governments, our federal government, state, county, cities they're all looking at switching to save licensing costs. MSFT can't buy them all off. They'll pick the high profile targets, like California. But for every one they buy off three more will slip through. MSFT is losing the battle and if they stay the course long enough they'll lose the war. Although I think MSFT will adapt, just wonder how much they're going to lose before they do?

You really have to wonder about the collective sanity of a group that stays the course even when it's obviously the wrong one.
