That's the reason why MS put a stop to it. To make sure they can verify the integrety of the SP before the user installs it. By "they" I mean MS themselves, through ActiveX or something, because I doubt they trust their own users enough to check the checksums themselves.

I'm sure they don't care so much about having less of a load on their servers. But if people are going to install it, they want to make sure that the origin is from MS itself, and not somebody who hacked the SP and inserted a virus or deleted something essential or something like that. And for that I don't blame them.
