Common Sense and MSFT?
Surely you jest (I know, you're not kidding and don't call you Surely). This is MSFT we're talking about here. When have they executed anything well in the last ten years?

I suppose you could argue SP2 for XP was a bright speck in an otherwise bleak landscape of fumbled opportunities and hideous business practices. Too little, too late.

Had they not had such a big chunk of the desktop and productivity market they'd be dead already. They've gotten by because they such a big profit margin they can simply paper their mistakes with money. But that doesn't improve their execution or their products. Which are, IMHO, crap.

They've got a lot of their hopes pinned on Longbone but if you look at the adoption of XP it doesn't give me a lot of faith that Shoehorn will be the end all MSFT hopes it will be.

I think MSFT customers have finally been ridden hard enough and long enough that they're really tired of their petty chisels and heavy handed license practices. My best guess is that Longshot is coming along too late to stop the bleeding. I don't think MSFT will die anytime soon, but I'm guessing they equalize at much smaller market share than they have now.
