Computer Science is NOT DEAD!! Far from it!
I have something to say regarding this issue. Saying what I'm about to say is NOT gonna win any allies for me, but this needs to be said. First of all, let me start off by saying I'm a 46 year old student studying computer science. Hopefully I will finish my degree within 2 years. I'm halfway there. Anyway, for those of you who do not wish to pursue CS because you think all the jobs have gone overseas to India and China, YOU ARE MISSING THE ENTIRE POINT ON WHAT COMPUTER SCIENCE IS ALL ABOUT!! Simply point, this field is about innovation, creativity and problem solving. In other words, CS is only limited by ones imagination. Once you understand CS, you will virtually go anywhere with it. You best chances in the future will be that of an entrenpreneur. As a matter of fact, this whole society will at some point, have to face entrenpreneurship. The golden days of the 40 hour work week, paid vacations, sick time and retirement after 40 years are indeed LONG, LONG GONE! Nobody is providing that anymore. This is not only true for CS, but it's ALL OVER THE PLACE. When it's all said and done, the only thing left is entrenpreneurship. Like it or not, that's the way it is. Getting back to CS, many of you would say, it's hard to compete with someone overseas making 10 dollars a month writing complex software. Well you know, the laws of economics stand true: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Software companies who believe that can get away with exploiting cheap labor and bring the product home and charge American prices is sadly mistaken as some companies have found out. Good quality software doesn't come cheap and if companies want such a thing, they are gonna have to paid the wages, pure and simple. It will bite them in the end if they don't. That said, my point is this: don't be discouraged from something you love to do because of present conditions. Things change, nothing stays the same. That's what CS is really about: constant change. You must be prepared for this as well as life long schooling. Your education does not stop the minute you get your degree. It's just beginning. There are many of you out there who have great talent for CS and you're running away because of what you see. Take the blinders off and look to the future. You're gonna be part of it. If American technology is going to compete globally, then we'll need students of all backgrounds and ages to be tomorrow's leaders in the technology age. Otherwise, America will be doom. The choice is yours: Let's get back to what made this country great: Technology. Alright students, time for computer science 101. My 2 cents worth. PHIL
