And My Rebuttal.
I think the point has been completely missed in the previous post.

Linux isn't locked in to a single vendor, Linux can not be locked down. Linux is open and free to all to be redesigned as needed to fit any variety of situations. I don't see how Microsoft letting just anyone customize their software so that it can be so adaptable. To do so would completely undermine their business model. Truth be known, Linux developers could care less to emulate Microsoft and or their OS. The reason for this is the familiarity. Which I don't really think that many Linux distros are attempting to do such anymore anyway. From what I could tell when I installed KDE on SuSE 9.0, Mac OS X seems to be the Desktop of choice to emulate.

The fight is important, every day I see more and more people interested in software. I work in a manufacturing facility for a multi-billion corp. I have had various people ask me if I want a copy of Knoppix, or Redhat. Usually I have to reply that I already have another distro of choice.

As for 'Me Too" Products, OpenOffice is quickly becoming a choice application. Access is pretty much pointless, I never liked the idea of a single user database, Enter MySQL. Exchange, let us talk about this weak almost useless piece of crap known as every one's favorite spam tool. Other than email and calender, Exchange is nothing. That's why I use Lotus Domino. After using it, I see no reason for anything other than that.

GNU/Linux exists because someone wanted to create an OS that took ideas from people and allowed them to make it better. People could view the code and add modifications on a as needed basis.
Nothing else at the time did that. Linux grew because Microsoft attempted to take more that just the desktop.

And back to Opensource emulating Microsoft. Who decided to add a popup blocker to their browser in their next service pack? Who is going to add a download manager to their browser in the next OS release? The answer would be Microsoft. And why did they do this, because Opensource projects like Mozilla thought of it first and began taking focus away from that crappy browser IE.
