It has it's advantages.
If you use KDE a lot, then this is actually a plus as much of the code is shared. The shared libs only get loaded once and each app uses them.

Gnome isn't as good at this. Each additional program has a significant footprint.

I understand what you mean. I use both environments. I prefer KDE... just feels cleaner, and load the Gnome apps in it.

In a year or two I expect to switch to Gnome. By that time, it should have surpassed KDE. As I see it, KDE (Qt) is mostly done, and they are polishing the apps, but Gnome, althought very nice, is still in its early stages of development, and it has a lot of room to grow. Plus, Gnome is more "GNU" oriented and more comfortable among GPL developers.
