WHere is the need, and why is it of such low value?
Interesting that on one hand we are being told there is this huge need or demand, and yet the market forces simply don't reflect it. If anything, market forces are sending a very loud and clear message that American PHDs are over priced and that their work can be sent off shore for dirt cheap wages. (Or via H1-B bring the non-American PHDs here to take both your job and your place in society.)

Secondly, as I look back over the "computer tech" revolution for say 10 years, I see very little that I could attribute to PHD level research. In truth it seems most of the great ideas come from people that see a very real everyday need and come up with real solutions. Indeed, doesn't open source demonstrate this very fact? Heck, even Linus T. was a student when he wrote Linux, not a PHD.

Yes of course there is a need for basic research at the PHD level, but it appears to me it must be done by those that do it for the love of it because it certainly isn't for the financial benefit. Anyone care to guess how many PHDs spend half their life begging for a grant to do real research?

Perhaps it really comes down to this. Corporate America simply hasn't found a method to make all the round pegs fit into their square holes. Perhaps truly innovative thinking isn't a commodity that can be delivered "on demand". And maybe, just maybe that shiny new PHD should be rewarded with something more than a pink slip when the CEO is getting a $100 million in stock options and bonuses. Yeah, could just be...
