Are degrees that important in research?
There seems to be an over emphasis on higher degrees... I don't know all that much about pure research, but in my practical experience, my best employees are the ones with the lowest certifications, (some of them even lacking a BS.)

Maybe it is because they think outside the box (because they never learned the the box was there), or maybe it is because they have have to be that much better to compete, but they are my best.

I believe we need a driving motivation for our nation's output, such as what happened during WWII or the Moon Missions if we want to continue to have breakthroughs... (I vote for finding cure for cancer, but there are many worthwhile directions, we just need to pick one.)

Give us focus and we can do anything...
