Don't see how MP 3 would help
It's not the format, it's the DRM. AAC is a format (M4P) that any
company can use. The record labels would never accept MP3
unprotected so Apple chose AAC + fairplay which i consider to
be very fair since I can burn CDs for friends legally.

As a Mac user I have been flamed with, "the Mac is dead, what
are you going to do when they don't make them anymore etc." I
suspect the same could happen with formats and players other
than iPod + itunes. Yes I know that the 800 lb gorilla MS is
about ready to spring in directly but look at some events that
may take the iPod from majority to monopoly:

The BMW thing is the tip of the iceberg. I'll bet Apple is
negotiating with every car company that will listen to them on
this issue. Can you imagine the affect of Toyota/Apple making
the same announcement that BMW/Apple did? Alpine will be
releasing a converter for all their car stereos. When I shop for my
next car I will be looking for iPod compatability.
Then there are phones, Moto is a big player but Nokia is even
bigger. This enhances the store and if the store is more
sucessful and more screws are put to rhapsody and napster then
the 1 on 1 expected to be played out between MS and Apple tilts
more Apple's way. Also since phones don't have the memmory
of iPods the phone serves as a taste of what the iPod is like.
Brilliant! You allow the phone companies to use the DRMs on a
product that does not directly compete with your flagship
gadget.

Sure it could go all wrong for Apple but righ now I see this
thikng as a snowball effect.
