Copyright versus Patent
You may be right about copyright violations, but in the world of patents there is absolutely no reason for anyone to have to view the underlying code to find a violation. For example, if the concept of electronic spreadsheets had been patented, anyone developing their own spreadsheet program would be in violation. They could have developed the code entirely on their own. They could have been totally unaware of the existence of other electronic spreadsheet software, and yet they would infringe on the patent.

All I can say is "thank heavens" that spreadsheets weren't patented.
