Kudos to IBM
They may be using Linux to make money on services and sell commercial apps but they have also contributed alot to GNU/Linux/OSS. Many are now benefitting from these contributions.

I wonder if MS will make a similar pledge.

MS is on a self-destructive path. If they altered their strategies they could ensure their long-term survival and profitability. The OS is becomming commoditized. MS cannot stop this. At best they will abuse the system to maintain a lock on the OS in the U.S. but not beyond that. If MS was smart they would abandon this notion they seem to have that they are destined to control all sofware. They should market Windows more competitively at a lower price. They should look at an emerging Linux market as an opportunity to sell their applications. But the one thing they must come to grips with is the fact that their products are no longer worth the premiums they continue to demand.

Unless MS changes their strategies fundamentally they will become extinct. It's only a matter of time.
