Unlikely Activation Impacted Earnings
>> If unauthorized use of Microsoft software was so prevalent, their Activation policy should have increased sales and profits of Windows XP Home and Office 2003. Since it has not, I wonder if it was worth agravating consumers. <<

Windows XP was released two years ago, so the numbers that are being reported hardly reflect the impact of activation on the sales of Win XP. From previous sales numbers of Win XP, particularly during the slow economy, Win XP has been a remarkable success. (Remember as a practical matter, relatively few users have dealings with Windows activation since most copies of Win XP that are sold come pre-installed on computers.) As for Office 2003, it was only just released. The figures reported for Office hardly reflect a negative impact of activation used in Office ? since activation has been used in office for quite a while. It is more likely that the sales number reflect people opting forgo Office XP, and purchase Office 2003 instead.
