This has nothing to do with legacy
I don?t see how your point relates to this story. For one thing the CRM application that the article speaks of is not a legacy application.

I also disagree that legacy support is what is killing Microsoft. Microsoft doesn?t support legacy hardware and software because it wants to; rather it supports legacy hardware and software because it has to. There is no such thing as a ?Windows? brand of PC. There are many brands of PCs on the market like Dell and HP\Compaq as well as home built systems. The vendors build their PCs to their customer?s specifications and Microsoft has no control of this. Their support of legacy hardware and software is one of the reasons (and for some customers the only reason) why customers continue to use Windows. Sure, Microsoft could say that the next version of Windows only supports ?Longhorn? certified 64 bit hardware and software but that would only serve to give customers a reason to switch to Linux or Macintosh. Believe me there are already enough reasons for customers to make the switch.

Microsoft?s marketing 64 bit only for servers makes sense to me also. What are the current offerings for consumers? Where are the 64 bit apps? The answer is that 64 bit is not quite ready for the masses desktops. Now don?t get me wrong; someday everyone will have 64 bit machines, but it will be 3-5 years. Really, the only offerings today is for 64 bit servers.
