- A scenario
-
This is a hypothetical scenario:
My business partner uses MS Office 2000
Another uses MS Office 2003
We use Microsoft Office 2007. By default, each version saves in it's own format. Yes, each is different.
If I create a document and send it both entities, neither will be able to open the <ocument. If the second firm I mentioned creates a document and sends it to me and the other guy, I will be able to open it, the other guy will not.
This is what's wrong with using their document format. Their goal is to get you to upgrade. Period. Backwards compatibility doesn't apply here, as Microsoft Office is the sibling "Cash Cow" to Windows.
BTW - Open Office can read Microsoft Office documents just fine. Sun made a plug-in for Microsoft Office, so that you may open an Open Office document in Microsoft Office. Microsoft *could* have done so, but they are protecting their cash cow. They have no interest in standards support - that will dry up their cows!
However, if you feel you must spend ~$400 / seat on Microsoft Office, feel free. Have fun managing your licenses and auditing your systems for the BSA. Meanwhile, we'll be using Open Office and spend our time doing company business.
