The guy just might have a point
I do believe the problem these days is that companies these days will come up with a api, file format, codec, etc, patent it, and use that patent to try and lock people into their applications, OS, etc. This might be good for business, but it sucks for end users.
Instead, why not have standards bodies create the protocls and stuff, and then have companies compete with their apps around price, easy of use, functionality, etc? IMHO, this is the right and ethical way to do it. But then again, when did ethics ever come into play in Corporate America?
