An Angle to Create a New Market for Sun Software
Sun has managed to stay way behind in the web server game despite having java web servers from the get go.

BEA, IBM, Borland and Oracle have all been more agressive and successful in this arena. JBoss has been widely accepted by the open source people.

This move won't damage any of these players significantly. What it might do though is bring attention and potential market share for Sun software. Sun wants to get into software more and this is a good way to get some attention.

A free web server should appeal to a large percent of the spartan army of java web developers who generally like Sun stuff. It should also appeal to those who haven't committed to a java web platform but would like to try a system out. The server is free after all.

Historically this has been a good way to develop a new software market. You can be sure that in addition to a base model a deluxe enterprise version will be appear that will have to be purchased.
