Patents problem in all software
It's impossible to write any program, open source or not, that is longer than 1000 lines of code doing some meaning ful task without breaking a registered patent or two.

The reason for this is that US patent office grants almost anything. They do so as they have a financial interest in in it.

It is another matter if thes patens are valid though. To be valid the stuff patented must be useful, novel, and unobvious to persons with ordinary skills in the art.

So if you are afraid of software patents your logical move would be to move your busiess to a country where software can't be patented. There are plenty of such countries in Asia and as an extra bonus you get lower saleries for your employees and a lot more potential customers.

If you stay you will have to raise the price of your products to cover potential litegation. This means that your customers will have to raise the prise of their products. This means that they will be less competitive in the international market.

In the end only lawyers will gain from this.
