IBM has been carefully avoiding taking direct responsibility for Linux. Why should they change their minds now that the copyright/patent vulnerability is becoming more apparent?

And if Sun isn't considering buying Novell for its software, what on earth do they want?

The "non-Linux software is less interesting" quote is strange, considering Sun could have had SuSE for less than a tenth of what Novell would cost. More to this story, I think.
