Way to go Novell !!!
Hey, you gotta give the devil their due and in this one they beat the pants off of Red Hat.

As many of you know, I do run a Linux server as both a file/print server and a testing platform. I also happen to be lucky in that one of the young fellows working with me is a Linux "geek". (Has a T-shirt that says so in bold letters.)

He is very involved with the Linux community and sings the praises of the Linux 2.6 kernel. So much so he has convinced me it is time to port/recompile (and a wee bit of coding) some (small bit of it anyhow) of our software base to run on it and take advantage of it's new capabilities for in house testing.

He believes that it should excel as a data collection "box" on the factory shop floor and to my mild surprise, all of the Windows guys in the shop agree with him. It will certainly be interesting to see how it measures against the Windows boxes. Although I suppose I'll have to give it some cheat factor as the Windows software has had years of hard work and optimization by lots of great people. (My guys and gals.)

Where does this take us? Hey, we are a Microsoft shop in just about everyway, however ignoring an obvious competitor is just plain dumb. Especially when that competitor has certain things going for it that don't fit well in a for profit paradigm. And no, this isn't a MS sucks, or an Apple is expensive, or anything else to slam the competition. It is simply recognizing Linux indeed has it's drawing points and they need to be considered and tested in our real world applications.

Am I serious about the test? Yup, in fact I had our Linux guy place an order for a new machine today. He told me he wanted the weekend to consider the hardware and place an order Monday. He said something about a dual Opteron 64-bit system with a whole bunch of RAM... happy
