RE: Linux tool speeds up computer forensics for cops
The best tools are ones that electrically block write commands to hard disks, rendering it impossible to corrupt the evidence (intentionally or not). The question with Linux is whether or not it will support the multiple functions required for a forensic toolkit, which now includes many esoteric analysis tools such as facial recognition, fuzzy pattern matching, decryption engines, etc.

As there is a rapid uptake of strong encryption by potential cyber-criminals, many police agencies are moving towards a "sneak-and-peek" type of offense: either by remotely installing spyware on a suspect's computer or by executing a secret physical intrusion and installing a hardware key logger. If the suspect's key is captured, then encryption is not an obstacle and actually can be used as proof of a de facto crime in some jurisdictions.
