Quite boring really. Local search is a well known problem with limites returns. As more people have become computer savvy they've learned it's best to keep things in one place. Microsoft helps with "My Documents".

In addition the "Indexing Service" has been around for YEARS. This is better how? Oh, pretty UI. Big deal.

products in the past tried to make a big deal of searching on your local hard drive... anyone remember Lotus Magellan product? Released a few years after Lotus' zenith and the subsequent descent into irrelevancy it indexed the files on your local hard drive.

Dunno about the rest of you but I generally don't go mining for data on my local hard drive. After all, even an army of one can only generate so much information.

It's when I'm seeking information that is completely new to me where things get interesting and MS is phantasizing if someone they can do a better job than Google. I highly doubt it. Oh they'll try, very hard, for years and years and years. But pointing my browser to MS' search when it debuts is not something that I see readily happening.

I've already contributed to its monopoly in various ways... I don't feel the need to contribute to its dominating yet another arena. Competition is good.

Thankfully Internet search is not something that can readily be usurped with its desktop position. Sure, it will make its search site the default search engine on future versions of Windows but hopefully by then Google will be much more entrenched and existing users of Google (of which there are many) will become that much more ensconced... and oh yeah, maybe LINUX desktops will start making MS sweat (one can always hope).
