Winning Scenario
If your first paragraph provides the only requirements to win, then you're probably right about Microsoft.

However, recently some alternative scenarios have emerged where the CxO is willing to avoid lock-in to facilitate best-of-breed solutions.

Open Source encourages, more so than single vendor solutions, open standards. Consequently, where Microsoft locks you into Windows/IIS/.Net Redhat provides Linux/Jonas/Java and if you want to replace Jonas with JBoss to gain an advantage in your shop you can. If Redhat provides that differentiation from Microsoft then they can win the alternative scenario.
