and buy up manufacturing resources, silicon, the innards of the computers, and still be everywhere. Such products are finite and not easily replicable as software code.

As for buying European patents and intellectual property, there is still profit in owning them and/or the companies that create them. It doesn't stop IBM or Sun, and if they can't leverage them, they make inroads with OSS groups by opening them up (gaining by giving away something that doesn't take away from their own IP).

There still playing the same game alot of their competition plays, but they have to be careful about running afoul their monopoly status. shocked
