Itanium
First, PLEASE, I am simply debating this in a friendly manner.. Please don't take offense if you don't agree. Please *DO* make your point and show me where I'm wrong. Nothing in your post, with exception of the HP-Intel venture comes across to me as fact.

I do know Compaq (and said it) got DEC first. I did also say they sold off what they didn't want. And yes, Intel did end up with the rights.
We do agree on that, true?

Therefore, so you don't see the connection that I see, having seen the actual chip layouts?

Can't you see where the best of the old was taken (and I do agree that Intel getting the Alpha people is one of them)?

The VME/VSB concept ... one for I/O and one for memory is it that much different than the classic Harvard architecture within a processor, simply extended to the rest of the computer? Now taking that concept further and refining it... why NOT take the AMD SMP Hammer architecture and overlaying it with VME/VSB and fixing what was deficient??? Is that too far reaching?

I'm simply asking you to look back and look forward, seeing that we have taken the best of the past and recycled it... making it better in the process. I assume I wasn't clear in that. If I wasn't, I apologize as it was my intent.

And I ask you this.. you *DO* know that Windows/NT, and it's successors... now including Windows/2k and XP are written on the NT kernel which was developed by the group on Spit Brook Road, Nashua, NH by DEC?

Now, if you wish numerology... Take the letters
VMS (DEC's "GREAT" operating system)... add 1 to each letter... you get WNT... Hmmm.. Windows/New Technology.. Windows/NT perhaps?

PS: I saw NT running on an 80286 with windows 3.1 over 10 years ago. I'm sure I can go find the install floppies or even get them if needed.

Again, I apologize if I intermixed two different concepts without making clear boundaries. Please do accept my apology for that. But I do stand steadfast... Having interviewed with AMD when Hammer was being developed and having seen it and even asking to describe what i saw on the similarities and simple 'maturing' of a good concept. Please... seperate the core of the cpu from the interfaces... extend the architectures from just the CPU to permeate the entire machine. Is that not what we have?
