How old is the IA-64 and don't forget VME/VSB
Honestly, how old is the IA-64... or for those who don't know it by it's Digital Equipment Corp name "Alpha".

The Alpha was king of the hill... NOTHING could beat it. Intel ended up with ownership after Compaq and other companies bought up and sold off those pieces of DEC they didn't want.

The IA-64 isn't a casualty..... It's the prototype everyone learned from...

Also, look at this before you say it's a 'casualty'....

Look at the AMD Sledgehammer (Opteron) "Hammer" cores..... Look at the bus logic.... but MOST importantly... look at the architecture... Draw the BIG picture......

Now, go back and look at the Motorola 9-U VME boards (YES.. the M68020 and M28030) which had the VME bus ("Hypertransport")... the new switch-matrix north bridge ("VSB front-side bus") and both the Moto and AMD solutions "Sharing global memory while each processor has faster local memory which is still accessible over the main bus"..... HMMMMMMMMMMMM.... Seems we have Moto to thank don't we? 8 CPU M68030's with VSB and VME being rebuilt on chips instead of boards compared to 4 (theoretically 8) Opterons with the North bridge and HyperTransport. Uncanny, isn't it?
