Some quotes:

For its part, Microsoft has been slower than it originally planned in delivering a version of Windows XP that runs on 64-bit x86 processors...

Microsoft reiterated Tuesday that such a version will ship by the end of this year and noted that it supports nearly all the features of the 32-bit OS, unlike a more limited 64-bit version of Windows that shipped for use with Intel's Itanium processor.


Note that Microsoft's current support for Itanium is characterised as "limited" and their attempt to divert attention to developers.

When MS deliver a stable, useful product then developers may start to take note. Until then, MS will continue to bring up the rear in the "race" to deliver a 64-bit desktop OS. BTW, they will be last since everyone else has already finished.

Funny that DEC was pumping out high performance 64-bit chips and desktop systems nearly a decade ago, yet MS still haven't managed full support for 64-bit. I wonder how much of the Itanium support is just left over DEC Alpha code...
