You are correct
OSX does require extensions and OSX apps do add those
extensions automatically when saving. However, OSX still
recognizes forks and opens the attachment in the right program.
If I receive a .eps created in Illustrator, it opens in illustrator. If I
receive a .eps created in Photoshop, it opens in Photoshop.

We have used macs for many years - sending attachments to
Windows users. Without an extension the Windows users could
never open them. It did not matter if their e-mail didn't
recognize them or not because, without that extension, Windows
could not recognize it. It was no big deal to simply add the
proper extension to the title when saving.

The problem is not Outlook. It's the mac classic users who are
not adding extensions to the file names when saving. Linux also
requires those extensions.
