Dunno, kinda seems like a day late and a dollar short
For a company headed by a blow hard as big as Scott McNealy the lack of competitiveness in their products when the euphoria of the late 90's disappeared makes me incredulous.

Sun's problem is that it was pushing two very different messages. On the one hand they were saying "Look at Java! Look at this great software!" however the fact that you can run it somewhere OTHER than Sun hardware doesn't boost their cause in that space. Likewise focusing on hardware doesn't make for the greatest software.

The creator of Java, namely Sun has benefited the least from its rise in the developer ranks. IBM with WebSphere and BEA with WebLogic have made way more money with Java than Sun.

Despite Jonathon Schwartz's recent assertion that computing has not become commoditized, the reality is, many aspects of information technology are now very much commodities - much to the chagrin of Sun's bottom line.

You'd have to be retarded to shell out as much money as Sun wants for UltraSparc hardware when a dual processor Pentium system will give you a hell of a lot more bang for many kinds of applications.

It seems Sun is now trying to be nimble, yet I've heard the "We're gonna support other things other than what we create" story before. Sun has been very plagued by "Not Invented Here" these last few years. A tough propostion to be in when the world around you isn't what it used to be.

I'd rather Sun survive. They're Java's benefactor and I would rather not see schisms created in that space... which tech companies are oh so wont to do.
