Yup, and...
MIcrosoft's competitive advantage is not because of a
superior product, but because of superior business acumen
and weak regulatory control. They have consistently
broken laws to destroy competition and have not been
punished once. Their power and influence is derived from
their monopoly in desktop operating systems, that's it.

On the other hand, open source companies are free to
bundle any open software they see fit, so consumers can
pick the best of the bunch for their circumstances without
illegal licencing deals or restrictive OEM contracts
determining the outcome.

If I write good software and as a result Red Hat
distributes it with their OS, how have I lost? I will have
many customers asking for support and assistance, I can
charge to supply that assistance, but not more that others
who may be just as good (or better) at support.

Where are the drawbacks, other than for those vendors who
depend on proprietary lock-in enforced by closed source?
