I have never called it that. We just have longer leashes, but the freedom has always been limited. Why do you think the early pioneers kept moving west? Among other reasons, many wanted to escape the ever-increasing stacks of laws. Heck, even the Mormons came west because the established laws in the U.S. at that time infringed on their freedom of religion.

The United States is at that point in time where it will either succeed as a democratic "free" country or fall into a dictatorship of the monied few. It is not a new pattern as many European countries had the same thing happen.

The problem is that here, we have politicians criss-crossing the country telling us that all the restrictions on our rights are for our "protection" from "terrorists" and "zealots" and the uninformed masses take them at face value. That's how freedom is slowly eroded. Not by the grand sweeping gestures, but with the drip-drip-drip of small, seemingly unconnected acts.
