10 years from now in the computer industry?
Okay, I'll speculate.

I haven't been much impressed by a lot of the stuff Microsoft has been investigating in their concept labs, as reported in the papers. Bill Gates, as proven by descriptions of his home as it was being built, believes in too much technological intervention in areas where it's not needed.

But he does have one thing right: voice.
Oh, not voice recognition itself, which is a fairly obvious convenience. But voice as a symbol of minimizing the interaction between person and computer.

In general, from home to work, users will be interested not in having the computer do much more, but in having less to do with the computer.

So, no updating, no patching, no locating and installing programs.
Computers will maintain themselves.

No searching and no adding capabilities over the keyboard in most cases.
Tell the computer what you want it do that it doesn't do already, and it checks an approved list of programs. If it finds what you want, it downloads and installs. If not, it tells you.

In short, computer interaction on a need to know basis only.

That's what most people want and are willing to pay for. So it's coming.

Don't know. He hasn't checked in with me for a while. I'll tell him you were looking for him when he does.
