Why not patent software?
Can't software be a unique, original, invention that deserves protection?

AFAIK, copyright law only provides protection for the particular expression (code) of the idea.. not the logic (algorithm) it's based on..

And, AFAIK (my objections become greatly diminished if this isn't the case.. I'm not a lawyer here!), you could take a look at someone's code, describe how it does what it does (in english, pseudocode, flow chart, etc.) and code it in another programming language and not violate copyright law. (Think IBM clones)
