RE: Report fuels OpenOffice vs. OOXML debate
Hey, is anyone really reading this stuff? The quoted statement, "On the other hand, libraries and large businesses, faced with storing and using years of Microsoft Office legacy documents, will prefer OOXML, as OOXML can more faithfully re-create the look and metadata (such as spreadsheet formulas) stored in Microsoft's binary file formats." in and of itself is enough to hang the Burton Group analysis as well as Microsoft. READ THAT STATEMENT AGAIN. It clearly admits that MS is proprietary in all forms and that if you don't have the appropriate MS application to "read" it's documents than you won't now or in the future be able to read any MS documents. As this article loosely states, if you're already a 100% MS shop than go for it. But if you use any products outside the MS stable beware since MS refuses to play nice with others while it enforces it self perceived domination of the applications world. Note, that even MS Office 2007 is having a hard time being backward compatible with it's own document formats. And now MS wants to introduce an even more proprietary format which will ensure that only MS products can consume. How is this good for any public or private sector company that needs to look at it's costs both short and long term as well as historical, archival processes. Just because we're in a digital world doesn't mean history is no longer important.

Blah! Butler Group has shown it's sycophantic roots to Microsoft. Not worth the digital ink.
