What does BECTA have to do with this?
The BECTA issue is not to do with OOXML. BECTA has an issue with the way that Microsoft licenses Vista in academic institutions. Microsoft has a simple licensing model for schools giving them complete coverage of all PCs. BECTA has an issue with this because some schools, so they say, have many PCs that are not capable of running Vista hence the licensing is not fair. However I have not spoken to one School that has an issue with this licensing model, mainly because it is very cost effective due to there being little cost overhead that would otherwise be caused by a more complex licensing model. Their argument is flawed in any case because if they get their way it will mean more expensive and more complex licensing for schools. Microsoft is not always as evil as people think, just try to uncover the real story and don't believe all the anti-hype that's out there.

As for ODF vs OOXML - what's wrong with being able to choose? I have customer where ODF may be more appropriate and other where OOXML suits their needs better. I like having the choice and wouldn't want either one to "win"vs the other. The Burton Group report has some very good points that should be considered.
