...Open Office does have one irrefutable thing that it offers over the competition and that is that its free.

Other than that, why should we really get too concerned over the format wars. In the past, Open Office has always been able to open, edit, etc the Microsoft Formats and I assume they will continue to do that. The fact that Microsoft is trying to make it s format an ISO standard only makes that easier since they have to publish all the required documentation. There has been a lot of criticism about how complex it is, but come on - some smart programmer will figure it out.

So whats the big deal?
