I'm sure they looked at that!
Since M$ been around for quite some time... back in the 80's when all we had was BBS's, their external programs were called "doors". I am sure quite a few companies like M$ looked at copyrighting that too. Afterall, you name the computer tech and they were/are deep in Kimshi trying to dominate and monolpolize every nook and cranny!
