Well, that's true, but it isn't the hosts file that needs to be changed. Your ISP's name server needs to know that a bogus domain name should result in a "no record" error instead of Verisign's redirect page. I think the Berkeley name server (BIND) has updates that get around Verisign's "feature," but it's up to everyone who runs a name server to update their code.
