Of course no-one uses old file formats, do they?
How stupid of Microsoft.

Let's face it, go back to the days of Word 97. Sometime later, the first person in the company gets Word 2000, but saves everything in Word 97 format so coworkers can still use the files. No-one tracks when everyone is over onto Word 2000; when the first user gets Word 2002, they know that most people will be on Word 2000, are not sure about Word 97 - some old PCs might still be running them.

Thus, it is likely that there are files in use where the format is two or three versions older than the current one.

After all, if you only use Word for simple letters, why would you need the latest version.

It all goes to show that the sooner we have a genuine open format standard, the better. Norway is leading the way by mandating it from 2009 for all public documents.
