How hard would have it been to do a little impact survey? Then to think that you could yank the proverbial rug out, shred it, then say, just glue the pieces back together.

They could also easily asked the user if they wanted to deactivate the formats, upon the first launch after the update.

They could have also prompted the user when they opened one of these file types, that they are discontinuing support and that the user should save it in a new format. Then turned the formats off in the next update.
