Brought it on themselves
Sun is to be commended for creating and sponsoring Java, but at the same time has planted the seeds of its own destruction. Sun has admitted that it needs to transform from a hardware company to a software/services one, but by making Java so open it has effectively prevented basing its entire company on income from Java. While Sun can continue to derive income from Java licensing, will that be enough to sustain the company? Since Sun sells JES now, and will (apparently) soon give the product away, what will make up the loss?

One has to wonder about Sun. Its support of Linux renders its (expensive) servers unnecessary. It's support of Java renders its (expensive) application server unnecessary. Is the need to fight Microsoft so great that the company will destroy itself in the process?
